Most of the
people in Ecuador do not speak another language than Spanish. Although the
inhabitants of Galapagos speak better English than anywhere else in Ecuador, it
causes problems at the hacienda. The permanent workers cannot explain the
reason for the tasks volunteers have to do. The volunteers are getting clear
tasks written by the organizations who gain the volunteers, but an often
complain is that the volunteers do not understand why they have to do what they
are doing. They get the feeling that they are kept busy while doing unnecessary
work.
Another
missing link is a coordinating person. When the volunteers arrive at their
hacienda, they have big expectations about the work they’re about to do. The
problem is that they have no idea what they are going to do until the morning
of that working day. Jose is cooperating with a lot of other villagers on San
Cristobal, which is a good thing, but nobody knows about it. As a conclusion
there must be a clear description of all the tasks a volunteer can be doing at
the hacienda. It is also needed to work more structured by making for example a
week planning. In this way the high expectations can be reached.
Gaining
volunteers can be done different. At the moment the offer of volunteer work is
just focused on the work they will be doing. The question is: can it be offered
in a more touristic way? Nearly every person in the western world wants to
travel to one of the most beautiful and unique places on earth. That can be
used in the promotion of volunteer work.
Foto's rechts hiervan!
